Rape at the University of Glamorgan: Police release CCTV

POLICE investigating the rape of an 18-year-old woman at the University of Glamorgan, Pontypridd, have released CCTV of a man they wish to trace.
The CCTV images are released as the charity Crimestoppers and the University have offered a combined reward of £10,000.
The reward will be available to anyone providing information to Crimestoppers leading to the arrest and conviction of any person or persons linked to the incident.

The CCTV shows a man walking through the university campus in the early hours of Saturday, September 26 wearing a hooded top which appears to have a panel across the top.

The incident occurred at the Glamorgan Court Halls of Residents in Treforest sometime between 2.30am and 4.50am.

Detective Inspector Dave Runnalls, who is part of the investigation team, said: “Since the rape was reported to us on Saturday, September 26 a dedicated team of officers have been working their way through hundreds of hours of CCTV footage to identify people on the campus.

“We are now in a position to release images of a man seen on camera walking through the campus at the relevant times.

“We are keen to identify this individual and establish why he was on the campus in the early hours of Saturday, September 26. There could be an innocent explanation for his presence that morning but we would ask him, or anyone who recognises him, to contact us.”

Crimestoppers’ Director of Operations, Dave Cording, said: “We strongly urge anyone with information on this crime to call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. No personal details are taken and calls are not traced, nor recorded, so your identity will never be revealed.

“Rape is one of the most harrowing crimes so it is vital to help try and bring justice for the victim.”
Police are also anxious to trace a further individual who was on site in the early hours of Saturday, September 26 who could be a potential witness.

This man, dubbed ‘hat man’ by the investigation team, befriended some students with whom he walked back to the campus from the Treforest Railway Station at 2.30am.
He is described as being around 19-years-old, approximately 5ft 8in tall, of average build, and was wearing dark denim jeans and a distinctive Blue Brothers style-hat. It is thought his name might have been Ryan.
Superintendent Tony Smith, area commander for Taff and Rhondda, said: “I wish to reassure the community that extensive enquiries are continuing and the victim is being kept fully updated on the investigation.
“On-going patrols of the campus are being carried out by the local neighbourhood policing team who are working closely with university security personnel.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact the charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
