Plane hoisted into position

After the delivery of the plane last night, which we found out was 24 hours early, it has now been moved into position just outside the new maintenance centre.

We took some pictures of it's last flight ready for the move into the centre.

Learning Resources Centres: Opening hours

Three years ago we reviewed the opening hours of the Learning Resources Centres. Following a student survey, a focus group and taking into account usage figures some improvements were made to address concerns raised by the students. These included opening earlier in the mornings (the change most requested by students) and a greater use made of self service facilities, enabling students to issue and return their books themselves. During 2008/9 we received feedback from students (via Student Voice Reps and the University’s Quality Enhancement Committee) as well as from senior academic staff, indicating a need to make some further changes to the opening hours at Treforest and Glyntaff LRCs. These are the changes:

Treforest:

• Open on Saturdays until 8.00 pm instead of 5.00 pm
• Open on Sundays until 8.00 pm instead of 6.00 pm
• Open on weekdays until 10.00 pm instead of 11.45 pm

Glyntaff:

• Open on Monday - Thursday until 10.00 pm instead of 9.00 pm
• Open on Sundays between 10.00 – 4.00 (as a pilot during Autumn Term)

We have also been able to increase the opening hours for specific purposes during the year. These include the period leading up to examinations and resits and on some Saturdays during the summer vacation to support Police Sciences courses.

Overall, these changes amounted to a modest increase in opening hours. A survey of activity late at night in Treforest LRC showed that very little use was made of services after 10.00 pm. This has enabled us to rebalance the hours across the two sites, given the reduced resource levels. For students who need computing facilities day and night the computer lab based in Treforest’s J1 remains open 24 hours a day during term time.

We aim to ensure that, as far as possible, the opening hours of the buildings are suited to the study needs of the majority of students. In the current difficult financial climate it should be recognised that, if we open the buildings longer, those additional hours have to be paid for by stopping or reducing services elsewhere in the department.

Opening hours at the ATRiuM remain the same.

Details of the opening hours of all the library, media and IT facilities are available at: http://lcss.glam.ac.uk/hours/

Rape at the University of Glamorgan: Police release CCTV

POLICE investigating the rape of an 18-year-old woman at the University of Glamorgan, Pontypridd, have released CCTV of a man they wish to trace.
The CCTV images are released as the charity Crimestoppers and the University have offered a combined reward of £10,000.
The reward will be available to anyone providing information to Crimestoppers leading to the arrest and conviction of any person or persons linked to the incident.

The CCTV shows a man walking through the university campus in the early hours of Saturday, September 26 wearing a hooded top which appears to have a panel across the top.

The incident occurred at the Glamorgan Court Halls of Residents in Treforest sometime between 2.30am and 4.50am.

Detective Inspector Dave Runnalls, who is part of the investigation team, said: “Since the rape was reported to us on Saturday, September 26 a dedicated team of officers have been working their way through hundreds of hours of CCTV footage to identify people on the campus.

“We are now in a position to release images of a man seen on camera walking through the campus at the relevant times.

“We are keen to identify this individual and establish why he was on the campus in the early hours of Saturday, September 26. There could be an innocent explanation for his presence that morning but we would ask him, or anyone who recognises him, to contact us.”

Crimestoppers’ Director of Operations, Dave Cording, said: “We strongly urge anyone with information on this crime to call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. No personal details are taken and calls are not traced, nor recorded, so your identity will never be revealed.

“Rape is one of the most harrowing crimes so it is vital to help try and bring justice for the victim.”
Police are also anxious to trace a further individual who was on site in the early hours of Saturday, September 26 who could be a potential witness.

This man, dubbed ‘hat man’ by the investigation team, befriended some students with whom he walked back to the campus from the Treforest Railway Station at 2.30am.
He is described as being around 19-years-old, approximately 5ft 8in tall, of average build, and was wearing dark denim jeans and a distinctive Blue Brothers style-hat. It is thought his name might have been Ryan.
Superintendent Tony Smith, area commander for Taff and Rhondda, said: “I wish to reassure the community that extensive enquiries are continuing and the victim is being kept fully updated on the investigation.
“On-going patrols of the campus are being carried out by the local neighbourhood policing team who are working closely with university security personnel.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact the charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Ramadhan Al-Mubarak

Ramadan in 2008 will start on Monday, the
1st of September (in Saudi Arabia & UK) and will continue for 30 days until Tuesday, the 30th of September.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar. Muslims consider this whole month as a blessed month. They fast during the days of this month and make special prayers at night. People also give more charity and do extra righteous deeds. Also, in this Holy Month, The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) received the first revelation of Al-Qur'an (in one of the last ten odd nights of Ramadan). Ramadan is the month of celebration as well as the month of discipline and self-control.

Imperial College Malaysian Night 2008

Imperial College Malaysian Society proudly presents this year's Malaysian Night:
"KAWAN"
Friend.
Peng yo.

Redefining the Malaysian Night experience, "Kawan" is a story about infinitely more than just friendship; it is a commentary on past and present Malaysia as we see it, with new and original performances, peppered with a non-stop dose of good old Malaysian humour!

Priya sets off to fulfill her ill father's request to find his long-lost friends: Nordin and Siong. Along the way, she encounters colourful characters (a mischievous Mat Rempit and a rude Ah Beng, to name a couple!) while learning of her father's adventures as a young man growing up with his best friends in 1950s Malaysia.

Watch as the story unfolds.

Featuring original songs and brand new performances!
